Calculating the age to which the estimate for the force of mortality applies.

Memos vary on what assumption is used to calculate the age to which the estimate for the force of mortality applies. The two assumptions I've seen are:
- Force of mortality is constant
- Deaths are uniform
Both these assumptions imply that the average age of death is in the middle of the rate interval. Which of these assumptions should we use and why? 

In addition, would it be fine to simply assume that deaths occur on average half way through the rate interval?
